6. The Systemquant of Practice: A Repeating Cycle of Transformation
What Is the Systemquant of Practice?
FSF as a program does not consist of “exercises” performed one after another. It consists of repeating cycles — each of which passes through all three channels and closes with feedback. This cycle is what is called a systemquant (the author’s term, modeled on Sudakov’s system quantum of behavior).
A typical systemquant runs:
The Practice of Silence → reflection on the practice → integrative reflection in the group → goal-setting → proactive actions and communications → reflection on the actions → the practice of gratitude → a micro-pause (a mini–Practice of Silence) — and the cycle repeats.
At the end of the day there is a similar closing practice with reflection and gratitude. In parallel, the foundation of one’s lifestyle is sustained: sleep, nutrition, movement, cold exposure, information hygiene.
This may look like a complicated scheme. In reality it is a very simple logic — one found everywhere there is life.
The Minimal Unit of Learning
The systemquant is the minimal unit of adaptive learning. You cannot go smaller; anything larger is already several systemquants. The structure of such a minimal cycle was first described by P. K. Anokhin in the theory of functional systems and remains, to this day, one of the most elegant models of how living systems learn.
Any complete cycle of learning includes:

A purpose (the anticipatory image of the result — what is being striven for);

An action (the attempt to reach the purpose);

A result (what actually came about);

Feedback on the result (reverse afferentation), compared against the expected image held by the acceptor of the result of action;

A correction (refining the purpose or the manner of action);

A new cycle.
Without any one of these steps, the cycle does not close, and learning does not occur. Action without reflection turns into the blind repetition of the same thing over and over. Reflection without action turns into endless “mulling over” without any change. A purpose without feedback turns into a fantasy. Only the complete cycle creates learning.
In FSF, every systemquant is a fully closed cycle of this kind.
The Saltykov–Grachev Refinement: What It Is That Organizes the System
Here it is worth making one clarification. In Anokhin’s classical formulation, the system-forming factor of a functional system is the “useful adaptive result” — that is, the result itself. In a contemporary revision proposed by A. B. Saltykov and S. V. Grachev, this thesis is refined: the system-forming factor is not the result itself but the anticipatory reflection of the result — the image, the forecast, the expectation⁷.
At first glance this looks like a scholastic nicety. In fact it is fundamental, and it is precisely what explains why in FSF goal-setting stands at the beginning of each systemquant rather than at the end or “whenever it comes.”
The purpose you have formulated at the start of the cycle — or, more precisely, made out — is itself the anticipatory image that organizes everything that follows. It retunes your attention, your predictions, your perception. Without that purpose, any action is random; with it, every action becomes part of a directed trajectory. This formulation can be read alongside the predictive-processing notion of an internal model of the future, though the two traditions were developed independently.
This is also why FSF does not work like a “psychologist’s waiting room,” where a person comes “to talk about what’s been troubling them” without a clear image of what they want to come away with. A purpose is not a pleasant addition but a precondition without which the cycle of goal-directed activity does not assemble.
Why Repetition
A single systemquant creates a state — a temporary change. Regular systemquants, repeated day after day, create a trait — a lasting change in neural networks and automatic behaviors.
This distinction is fundamental. Brewer et al. (PNAS, 2011) showed that novices in meditation exhibit changes in brain activity during practice, whereas experienced practitioners exhibit them outside of practice⁸. The change becomes part of the baseline state. What once required effort becomes natural.
What minimal regularity is needed for the transition from state to trait? The current data point in a clear direction: daily practice, starting from 10–12 minutes, in which frequency matters more than duration (Bowles et al., 2025; Palmer et al., 2023)⁹. The median time for a new habit to become automatic is about 66 days, with wide individual variation (Lally et al., 2010)¹⁰. In other words, roughly two months of daily systemquant practice — and the nervous system begins to reorganize itself.
The architecture of the FSF program is designed to support this regularity: systemquants are built into the daily routine and are backed by the group, the facilitator, and the chat — which lowers the “activation energy” that usually gets in the way of sustaining a regular practice on one’s own.
