PART IV. WHY TOGETHER
The Synergy of the Components and the Nature of Functional Systems Facilitation
“All the elements are interconnected. Good physical well-being lays the foundation for contact with oneself. Contact with oneself opens access to genuine experience. Honestly sharing that experience creates collective intelligence. Collective intelligence gives rise to vision. Vision fills life with meaning. Meaning creates well-being — and the cycle repeats at a new level.”
— from my methodological materials for the program
In Part III we looked at the components of Functional Systems Facilitation one by one — the Practice of Silence, reflection, group work, goal-setting, action, gratitude, the group chat, case discussions, the Intensive, the diagnostic, the lifestyle foundation. Each element has its own scientific grounding, its own mechanism of action, its own effect.
But if you add those effects together arithmetically, you arrive at noticeably less than the whole program delivers. The program as a whole appears to work more powerfully than the sum of its parts. This is not rhetorical exaggeration; it is an observation I have noted again and again, and one the rest of this chapter sets out to explain.
Part IV is short, but conceptually important. In two chapters I will take up two questions: why the components reinforce one another (chapter 18) and what lies behind that reinforcement in the very nature of the method (chapter 19).
